INTERNATIONAL STANDING PANEL

The International Standing Panel focuses on the Academy's role in the international community. It considers a broad range of issues, such as:

  • assisting in the development of democratic institutions in transitional democracies throughout the world
  • examining the management of the U.S. government's international activities
  • promoting information sharing on promising practices in public management.

CAPABILITIES

The International Standing Panel draws upon the knowledge and experience of the Academy's Fellows. One of the nation's richest reservoirs of experience in national, multinational, and international public management and administration, the Academy, through its Fellows, is studying to better understand what has and has not worked in the past six decades of efforts to build capacities for governance around the world. Many have had experience in disaster recovery, human dislocations, political upheaval, post-hostilities relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and reform.

FUNCTIONS

In pursuit of its missions, the Panel carries out the following general functions:

Technical Assistance and Support

  • Upon request, provides technical assistance or support in public administration at home and abroad.

Information-sharing, Conferences and Forums

  • Sponsors international forums and conferences designed to promote cross-border sharing of information and experience on public administration issues.

Training and Education

  • Helps train and educate public executives and staff in the U.S. to function more effectively and sensitively in a global community.
  • In countries requesting such assistance, helps provide training and education in public administration, and helps other nations to establish public administration educational and research institutions.

Research and Analysis

  • Conducts research and analysis to foresee and examine critical international issues in governance, and formulates practical approaches to their resolution.
  • Conducts research and analysis to distill lessons learned from past experience.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the Academy's standing panels is open to all Academy Fellows. Fellows who wish to become members of this panel—or have their names removed from its distribution list—should contact Saphonia Foster by email (sfoster@napawash.org) or at (202) 204-3672.

From time to time, the panels invite non-Fellows to join as associate members. These individuals are invited to provide specific expertise to the panel. Those who feel that their background allows them to make a unique and significant contribution to this panel's work should contact Saphonia Foster (sfoster@napawash.org) or at (202) 204-3672.
